- Montserrat is Catalonia’s sacred mountain. This multi-peaked mountain, composed of pink conglomerate and clay, hosts the Benedictine abbey of Santa María de Montserrat, where the black Virgin of Montserrat is enshrined. The abbey houses a museum with works of, among many others, El Greco, Dalí, and Picasso. The Escolania, Montserrat’s Boys’ Choir, is one of the oldest in Europe, and performs during religious ceremonies and communal prayers in the basilica.
